When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, energy efficiency is often at the top of the list. And with good reason – the right glazing can make all the difference to your comfort, your heating bills and even the feel of your home. But with so many options out there, the question we often hear is: what’s the difference between double glazing and triple glazing, and is the upgrade really worth it?
At Pinefield Glass, we love helping customers understand what they’re getting. It’s one thing to explain how each works, but quite another to show it. That’s why we always have corner samples on hand in the showroom – so you can see, feel and compare the difference for yourself.

The science behind double glazing
A standard double glazed window is made up of two panes of glass separated by a 20mm cavity filled with argon gas, which acts as an insulator, slowing down heat loss from inside your home.
To make the window even more efficient, a warm edge spacer bar runs around the perimeter, preventing heat from escaping through the edges. The inside pane also features a special coating that reflects warmth back into your home, keeping things cosy in winter and cool in summer.
The PVC frames that hold it all together are designed to be strong, secure, and low-maintenance, reinforced with a thermally efficient material – not the cold steel or aluminium used in older systems. Together, these features help double glazing achieve excellent U-values and energy ratings, making it a smart, cost-effective choice for most homes.

How triple glazing takes it further
Triple glazing builds on the same principles, but adds an extra pane of glass and another argon-filled chamber for maximum insulation. The frame itself doesn’t change drastically; instead, a slightly deeper internal bead allows for a thicker glass unit. That extra layer makes all the difference. It means:
Triple glazing doesn’t just improve energy performance – it also helps to reduce external noise, creating a quieter, more comfortable living environment. In short, it keeps more warmth in and more of the cold out, helping you save energy and money in the long run.
Which should you choose?
The right choice depends on your home and your priorities. Double glazing remains a tried-and-tested option that offers excellent performance and value. Triple glazing, on the other hand, is ideal if you’re looking to maximise energy efficiency, reduce noise or future-proof your home.
Our team at Pinefield is always happy to help you compare both options in person. You’ll be able to see the samples side by side and feel the difference for yourself, so you can make a confident, informed decision.
